SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL AIR & SPACE MUSEUM STEVEN F. UDVAR-HAZY CENTER
Chantilly, Virginia
Project Summary
The Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center (NASM-UHC), designed by Hellmuth Obata + Kassebaum, houses the nation’s most significant collection of aircraft and aviation memorabilia. It displays more than 150 aircraft in its huge Boeing Aviation Hangar and about as many rockets, missiles, satellites, and other spacecraft in its James S. McDonnell Space Hangar. The Udvar-Hazy Center receives over 1,500,000 visitors annually.
Fifteen years after its initial occupancy, the Udvar-Hazy Center is undergoing a comprehensive restoration of the exterior enclosure systems from roof to grade. The 760,000 square-foot facility has experienced leaks since its completion in 2003. Water intrusion through the hangar roof, glazing systems and foundation waterproofing jeopardize exhibitions and artifacts and disrupt museum operations.BPA’s principal architect is serving as the Building Envelope Commissioning Agent, representing the Smithsonian Institution from the design through final acceptance phases of the project. Construction of the renovations, including replacement of the hangar roof system, is expected to start in the spring of 2019.
